Sustainable Salons Program

The program provides the studio with the tools to repurpose excess packaging, product and even hair clippings to benefit the environment and give back to the community.

Plastic packaging is directed to specialist local plastic recyclers where it is cleaned and repurposed to make new packaging and outdoor furniture. This helps keep the plastic in circulation and out of our oceans.

Excess chemicals are pooled and sent to chemical recycling plants, where they are neutralised and turned into recycled water used in roadworks and construction. All aluminium, foil, colour tubes, cardboard, paper, magazines and unwanted tools are sold for recycling, with the proceeds donated to OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest.

Hair clippings are collected from the salon floor and stuffed into stockings to create Hair Booms to aid the clean up of oil spills. Donated ponytails are also collected and distributed to charitable organisations to create wigs for those suffering from cancer and alopecia.

As a member of Sustainable Salons, Studio on Grantham is part of a movement of environmentally and community minded businesses. The Sustainable Salons program to date has achieved the following results.

• 125,000kg in plastic kept in circulation and out of landfill
• 16,400L of excess chemicals recycled back into water
• 89,900kg of metal diverted from landfill
• 18,900kg of hair clippings collected to soak up oil from coastline spills
• 43,700 ponytails collected to create wigs for cancer and alopecia sufferers
